1) Convenience = Death. New York City thrives on convenience. Itās
convenient to get beer at 3 AM around the corner. Itās convenient to have your
choice of several clubs to go to each night rather than just one or two. Itās
convenient to have someone clean your streets and pick up your trash. Itās
convenient to know that there are a lot of people that donāt live too far from
you that are interested in exactly what you are. The longer I stay here the more
I become convinced that itās better to make your own, whatever it is youāre
interested in, because the price one has to pay (literally and figuratively) is
too great and we all end up losing in the end.
2) We live here. Rent is obscene, obstacles are many, bike-riding is
suicidal, breathing costs too much, space limits stifle creative impulses, cash
rules the spot, people are detached and often cruel and it smells. I really hate
it and I think that it just might be one of the least favorable environments for
human beings imaginable, but for some reason I stay.
Nerd:
If you mean: 1) that Iām compassionate when itās not cool to be; 2) that Iām not fashionable when itās hip to be; 3) that Iām not self-conscious when I ought to be; 4) that Iām more of a thinker than itās safe to be; 5) that Iām honest when you canāt stand me to be; and 6) that Iām not beholden to you when you want me to be; then, well, fuck yeah Iām a nerd!
